Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Home Guards celebrated the Home Guards Day at the community hall of the police quarters here on Saturday. City police commissioner K Periaiah and deputy commissioners of police honoured the personnel.
Addressing the home guards, Periaiah said that the department was started during the Second World War. "It was then expanded across India in 1963 and since then it has been doing its duty sincerely. Tamil Nadu has 15,622 home guard members. Their work was the best in the last assembly election," he said.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Sujit Kumar said, "Home guards members are committed towards regulating traffic during the peak hours. So, I prefer them for crowd control and traffic regulations."
Deputy commissioner of police (law & order) S Lakshmi lauded the women members of the home guards in the city.
As part of the celebration, TK Dhanashekar, area commander of home guards and his teams conducted a blood donation camp. Deputy commissioner of police (crime) P Perumal and other police officers participated in the event.
