A Sugar Creek Township man who lost his home to fire earlier this week had dialed too many digits when he tried to call 911, officials said.
SUGAR CREEK TWP. A Sugar Creek Twp. man dialed extra numbers, which is why his call to 911 never went through after his home caught fire, officials said Friday.
Carl King tried several times to dial the emergency number after fire broke out Wednesday in the basement of his home at 6479 Alabama Ave. SW. However, Maj. C.J. Stantz, with the Stark County Sheriff's Office, said King apparently punched additional digits to the 911 number while dialing, which prevented his call from going through.
After King tried unsuccessfully to reach 911, he first went to a neighbor's house in an attempt to get help. Eventually, a friend who was with King at the time was able to contact her daughter, who called emergency responders.
Stantz said officials looked into the matter, checking King's phone call log to make sure there wasn't a problem with the emergency number and that's when it was discovered he had misdialed.
"We want to assure residents that if you call 911 you will get through to an operator and we will get you assistance," Stantz said.
Multiple fire departments responded when a call for help got through, however flames had quickly spread destroying the house.
