Senior captain Jason Christensen notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds as Ashland (2-4, 2-3 TVL) held off a late rally by Bellingham (5-3, 4-1 TVL) for a 58-52 Tri-Valley League boys basketball victory on Friday night.
Clockers sophomore guard Cam Hardy added 13 points in the victory.
Bellingham trailed 20-12 after the first quarter, 32-23 at the half and 44-31 after three before rallying in the fourth.
“This was definitely a team win,” said Ashland coach Isaiah Davis. “The guys did a really good job against a very well-coached team.”
Ashland hosts Millis on Sunday at 6 p.m.
Bellingham hosts Medway on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
HOPKINTON 65, MEDFIELD 57: Junior guard Ben McKenzie scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead visiting Hopkinton (3-5, 3-3 TVL) past Medfield in a Tri-Valley League game.
Junior guard Michael Poovakad scored 11 points and had four assists and junior forward Brendan Kelly added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the Hillers win.
Hopkinton led 32-22 at halftime.
The Hillers host Bellingham on Friday.
MEDWAY 57, MILLIS 48: Chris Brooks scored 19 points and Medway (4-3, 3-3 TVL) made eight of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to defeat host Millis (0-6, 0-4 TVL) in a Tri-Valley League game.
Drew Plunkett added nine points for Medway, which led 32-22 at the half.
Bryce Latosek had a team-leading 17 points for Millis, which rallied to cut the deficit to two points midway through the fourth quarter. The Mustangs made nine foul shots in the final quarter to seal the win.
The Mohawks were just 8-of-18 in the game from the line.
Millis plays at Ashland Sunday in a TVL game at 6 p.m.
DEDHAM 45, DOVER-SHERBORN 37: Junior forward Brett Stark scored 16 points to pace Dover-Sherborn (4-4, 3-2 TVL), but the Raiders lost to Dedham in a Tri-Valley League contest.
Dedham led 22-13 at halftime.
“We cut the lead down to one in the fourth,” said D-S coach Rick Grady. “But we needed to play a complete game and we didn't accomplish that tonight.
D-S plays at Ashland on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
LINCOLN-SUDBURY 51, ACTON-BOXBORO 44: Sophomore Keith Hylton scored 10 points and had seven rebounds off the bench to help lead Lincoln-Sudbury (4-1) past Acton-Boxboro in Dual County League Large opener for the Warriors.
The Warriors trailed 26-22 at halftime but held A-B to just 18 points in the second half for the win.
L-S plays at Westford Academy on Sunday.
NORWOOD 65, FRAMINGHAM 57: Sophomore captain Sam Whiting scored 16 points to lead visiting Framingham (1-6, 1-2 BSC) in a loss to Bay State Conference foe Norwood.
Flyers junior guard Matt Fonseca scored 11 points.
Framingham led 22-9 early in the second quarter, but Norwood went on a 23-2 run to close the first half
“We cut their lead to three a few times in the fourth quarter but we couldn't get the stops we needed late,” said Flyers coach Jason Gosselin. “Credit to Norwood, they made winning plays down the stretch.”
Framingham visits Newton North on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
MATIGNON 89, MARIAN 57: Junior Romeo Horsley scored 25 points but Marian (4-4, 1-3 CCL) fell to Matignon in a Catholic Central Small matchup.
Freshman Issy Offiah added 11 points, but Matignon built a 58-27 halftime lead.
The Mustangs host Austin Prep on Tuesday.
WESTBOROUGH 60, GROTON-DUNSTABLE 48: Junior guard Mike Doherty scored 21 points, had four steals and three rebounds to lead Westborough (4-1, 3-0 MW-B) past host Groton-Dunstable in a Mid-Wach B battle.
Junior Matt Doherty had nine points, six rebounds and two steals in the win.
The Rangers led 27-21 at halftime and opened it up a bit to 44-37 after three quarters before putting it away in the fourth quarter.
Westborough hosts Leominster on Tuesday.
HOPEDALE 69, NIPMUC 49: Senior guard Isaac Moore scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Hopedale (3-3, 1-0 DVC) to a win over Dual Valley Conference opponent Nipmuc (4-3, 1-1 DVC).
Blue Raiders sophomore forward Dan Liberatore scored 14 points and junior guard Robbie Siefring added 10 points in the victory.
Kyle Downing led Nipmuc with 17 points.
Hopedale visits Douglas on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Nipmuc hosts Whitinsville Christian on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Girls Basketball
NIPMUC 40, HOPEDALE 33: Junior center Kali Scirocco scored all of her 11 points in the second half and also grabbed 16 rebounds as Nipmuc (2-5) rallied past visiting Hopedale in the Dual Valley Conference opener for both teams.
Sophomore forward Taylor Johnson had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors, who trailed 21-18 at the half.
Bri Frongilo, Kaytlynn Giombetti and Rachel Swanson each scored seven points for Hopedale.
“Kali had a great game for us and with her rebounding too,” said Nipmuc coach Missy Rhodes. “It was great to get the win in our conference opener. The girls fought hard all night.”
Nipmuc plays at Whitinsville Christian in a DVC game on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
GROTON-DUNSTABLE 66, WESTBOROUGH 12: Senior captain Emily Hannan scored six points on two 3-pointers as Westborough (3-4, 0-3 MW-B) fell to visiting Groton-Dunstable in Mid-Wach B action.
The Rangers committed 22 turnovers in the first half.
Westborough plays at Leominster on Tuesday.
MARLBOROUGH 56, FITCHBURG 18: Freshman Celine Al-Nammari scored 15 points on five 3-pointers as host Marlborough (3-3, 2-1 MW-B) rolled past Fitchburg in Mid-Wach B action.
Sophomore Lucy Cappadona scored 14 points on four 3-pointers with eight rebounds and six assists.
Junior Nicole Galliac scored 11 points and had eight rebounds for the Panthers, who made 13 3-pointers in the game and led 27-7 at halftime.
Marlborough plays at Shrewsbury on Tuesday.
BRAINTREE 55, WELLESLEY 47: Senior forward Sofie Paulsen scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Wellesley (5-2, 2-1 BSC) but the Raiders fell to Bay State Conference foe Braintree.
Wellesley junior guard Gianna Palli added 11 points and fellow junior guard Molly Cronin notched 10 points.
Wellesley hosts Milton on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
NORWOOD 49, FRAMINGHAM 39: Senior captain Julia Gelman scored 15 points to lead Framingham (1-7, 0-3 BSC) but the Flyers fell to Norwood in a Bay State Conference matchup.
Flyers sophomore Vienna Monestime tallied 13 points and junior Riley LaChance had 15 rebounds and eight points for the Flyers.
Framingham hosts Newton North on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
ASHLAND 69, BELLINGHAM 36: Senior forward Keara Flynn scored a game-high 14 points to lead Ashland (5-2, 4-2 TVL) to a victory over Bellingham (0-8, 0-6 TVL) in a Tri-Valley League matchup.
Clockers sophomore guard Kayla Madden tallied 13 points while junior guard Caley Surro and Megan Galvani added 11 points each in the win.
Bellingham senior Jesse Magerman led the Blackhawks with 13 points and Elizabeth Sender scored nine in the loss.
Ashland hosts Westwood on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
Bellingham next visits Medway on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
MEDWAY 56, MILLIS 49: Senior Riley Childs scored 25 points to lead host Medway (6-2, 5-1 TVL) past Millis in a Tri-Valley League game.
Freshman Lauren Beach scored eight points and junior Rachel Costello scored the first five points for Medway to get them off to a strong start.
Medway led 22-17 at halftime, but Millis kept it close with nine 3-pointers.
Freshman Eryn Rice made three of those 3-pointers and led Millis with 16 points.
Senior Meaghan Hourigan had 12 points and Abby Clark added 11 in the loss.
Medway host Bellingham and Millis hosts Dedham, both on Tuesday.
ACTON-BOXBORO 51, LINCOLN-SUDBURY 43: Senior forward Sofia Rosa tallied 18 points and 15 rebounds to pace Lincoln-Sudbury (3-1, 0-1 DCL) but the Warriors fell to Acton-Boxboro in a Dual County Large matchup.
Senior forward Hannah Brodsky added eight points and eight rebounds in the loss.
Boys Hockey
LUNENBURG/AYER 6, NORTHBRIDGE/NIPMUC/SUTTON/UXBRIDGE 1: Goalie Chris Wells made 32 saves for Northbridge/Nipmuc/Sutton/Uxbridge (3-4) in a non-conference loss to host Lunenburg/Ayer at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg.
Northbridge's Matt McGreevy scored in the third period for the Rams, who trailed 4-0 after the second period.
The game was scoreless after the first period.
Northbridge/Nipmuc/Sutton/Uxbridge next plays Littleton/Bromfield in a non-conference game on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough at 4:40 p.m.
Gymnastics
FRAMINGHAM 134.3, WELLESLEY 129.5: Senior Sophie Rich placed first on the vault with a score of 9.1, won the balance beam (9.0), and finished first in the all-around competition (34.3) to lead Framingham (2-1, 2-1 BSC) to a win over Bay State Conference rival Wellesley (1-1, 1-1 BSC).
Flyers sophomore Sara Anastasi placed first on the bars (8.4) and senior Rachel Lew finished third on the floor exercise (8.6) in the victory.
Wellesley senior Julian Von Hofe won the floor exercise (8.7) and took second on the vault (9.0) in the loss.
Framingham next visits Brookline on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
Wellesley visits Natick on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
