GREENVILLE — Wade Hampton’s Caleb Henry sank a pair of free throws to lift the Generals’ boys basketball team to a 49-47 win over Dorman Friday night. It’s the first loss to an in-state team this season for the Cavaliers (12-3), who are ranked No. 1 in Class 5A.

Class 5A seventh-ranked Wade Hampton was clinging to a 47-45 lead with 3:24 left to play and played keep-away running nearly three minutes off the game clock before Dorman’s Harris Finley came up with a steal. Cavs’ center Gabe Bryant, who was riddled with foul trouble much of the night, hit a jumper to tie the game

Henry then flew down the court and drew a foul with 3.3 seconds left. Shooting a 1-and-1, Henry rattled home the first foul shot before the second went down.

Dorman’s long inbounds pass was overthrown and Wade Hampton dribbled out the clock.

The Cavaliers trailed by as many as nine in the first half before rallying in the second. The Generals took advantage of 17 free throw attempts in the first half to take a 27-19 lead at the break.

Myles Tate scored a game-high 17 points for Dorman, while Kaleb Smith added 12.

Will Edwards led Wade Hampton with 15 points. Nick Brenegan and Ethan Girardeau each scored 10 also for the Generals.

GIRLS

No. 3 Wade Hampton 48, No. 5 Dorman 46: The Dorman girls also suffered a heartbreaking two-point loss. The Cavaliers nearly rallied from a 33-20 third-quarter deficit by hitting four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t get a potential game-winning fifth 3-pointer to fall.

Trailing 48-46, Dorman’s Alexis Rice drove down the court and drew a double team before firing a pass to Alex Washington in the corner. Washington’s shot bounced high off the rim and away no good as the final buzzer sounded.

The Cavaliers had a chance to win despite making just 0-of-3 free throws for the game. Dorman was whistled for 22 fouls in the game, while Wade Hampton was called for four.

“They really fought against a lot of adversity. I’m just proud of them for coming out here and doing what they did,” Dorman coach Valorie Whiteside said. “Alex Washington had a good chance to make that shot and she’s playing on a sprained ankle.”

“I was disappointed the last time we played Wade Hampton (a loss at Dorman), because we just didn’t play. This time we did. The intensity and energy were there. We weren’t taking bad shots, they just weren’t falling early today.”

Nina Otah had 12 points and five steals for Dorman (7-5), while Rice added 11 points and five assists.

Greyson Boone had a game-high 14 points for Wade Hampton. Alexis Guthrie had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Brittany Shipman scored 10 also for the Generals.
