Jón Gnarr, the Icelandic comedian, author, and erstwhile Reykjavík mayor, will soon be leading personalized walking tours of the capital city to the tune of USD690 [EUR574] a person mbl.is reports. The tour, entitled “From Punk to Politics,” was conceived of by travel company Iceland Unplugged and, according to the website description, “might begin” at Höfði house, before moving on to Hlemmur, the former bus station turned food hall, and then head toward downtown Reykjavík, “with Jón in freestyle mode.”

“I have various ideas, but [the tour] will largely be shaped by what people want to know about. Where their interests lie,” Jón explained. “There are, in reality, two stories. One is the personal story of my youth, which I talk about in my books, and which is connected to this area. The other is [about] the Best Party and that whole adventure. If people have read my books, then maybe I’ll go into that more, but if they just have an interest in politics or Reykjavík, then I’ll tackle it a bit differently.”

Jón says that he’s not sure if there have been any inquiries about the tours yet, but is looking forward to his first trip, particularly since he doesn't think it’s likely that many former mayors are taking tourists on walking tours of their cities. And he isn’t worried about keeping the flow of conversation up for the duration of the three- to four-hour tour, either: “I’ve long said that I have no problem blathering on with foreigners,” he remarked. But even so, Jón says he realizes that the pressure’s on to give visitors their money’s worth, since he knows the tours aren’t cheap.
