Welcome to today's Newcastle United live matchday blog, as the Magpies get their FA Cup campaign under way with a third-round tie against Luton Town.
The Hatters are flying high in League Two, currently sitting top of the table, four points ahead of second-placed Notts County, so will be a tough test for Rafa Benitez's men .
The Spaniard has picked a strong side today, with Freddie Woodman starting in goal, Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez up front and Matt Ritchie and Jacob Murphy on the wings. Jonjo Shelvey and Mikel Merino are partnered in central midfield.
Lee Ryder and Chris Waugh are at St James' Park this afternoon bringing you all the build-up, team news, live match action and full-time analysis and reaction.
Key Events
Diame coming on
He replaces Jonjo Shelvey.
Mullins heads wide
This has been far from straightforward in the second half.
Mullins jumps highest from a corner to power a header just wide of the far post from a Luton corner.
Elliot Lee given a warm reception
Class.
Elliot Lee clapped on to the field by Luton and Toon fans.
Newcastle playing 4-4-2
And that may be why Luton are gaining success.
Newcastle are playing more of a 4-4-2 now, with Perez pushing up alongside Gayle. It’s creating gaps in the middle, which Luton are exploiting at the minute.
Hayden booked
Poor challenge from the Newcastle man. It’s getting a bit fiery out there!
Very late tackle from Hayden, who commits early & takes out Collins, who had flicked the ball past him. Definite yellow.
Elliot Lee coming on
Both of Rob Lee’s sons will be on the field now.
Elliot Lee coming on for Luton.
Hylton barges Manquillo off the pitch
Rafa is furious!
Hylton barges into Manquillo just off the pitch & forces the Newcastle defender to go straight into the advertising hoardings. Rafa is furious, & is remonstrating with the ref, but a Luton throw in is given.
Shelvey booked
Newcastle are under the cosh here...
Definite yellow for Shelvey, who sees Justin running away from him in the middle of the Newcastle half. The Magpies midfielder stuck out his foot to trip him after Justin ran past him.
Chris Waugh hour verdict
Newcastle becoming slightly complacent...
Newcastle need to be careful here. Very careful. The game has opened up and, although the Magpies have had chances of their own. Luton look extremely dangerous themselves. The flag may have saved United the second time that Hylton had the ball in the net, but the Hatters forward has been excellent during the second half. Hayden and Clark are unfamiliar with playing together at centre-back, and it is showing, so Newcastle need a fourth in order to kill this game off.
Olly Lee goes close
That would have been some story...
And it’s just wide by Lee! Newcastle have a corner to defend. Luton having a spell here.
Luton free-kick
Dummett yellow card.
Dummett fouls Shinnie on the edge of the area & gets a foul. Dangerous Luton free-kick to follow, just outside the D.
Hylton providing the biggest threat
Switch on, lads...
Hylton fires an excellent shot past Woodman after the United defence is once again caught napping, Hylton broke clear, rifled past Woodman & then ran off in celebration, but the flag was up. Luton fans were celebrating, then Newcastle fans cheer.
Luton have a goal disallowed
Hylton has the ball in the net again, he celebrates wildly. But the flag was up. It’s up to the fans to point out he’s offside!
Gayle fires over
Some nice build-up play, though.
Another nice move down the left from Newcastle sees Gayle play it wide to Ritchie, receive the turn pass, before then the Magpies forward slips & his shot goes over.
Murphy remains brightest spark
But it is developing into a scrappy game.
Both sides giving the ball away a lot at the moment. Murphy remains Newcastle’s brightest spark. He runs from one side of the field to the other before trying to hit a shot goalwards, which is blocked away
Perez denied his hat-trick
So close.
Perez denied his hat-trick by the keeper. Gayle thumps over from the resulting corner.
Poor defending for the goal
Newcastle’s defence didn’t react...
Woodman kicks it long, Ritchie heads it on, then Newcastle don’t react in defence as Luton pump it forward. Hylton receives the ball in acres of space, Woodman rushes out, Hylton skips round him, then taps into an empty net.
GOAL: Newcastle 3-1 Luton
Danny Hylton pulls one back. They couldn’t, could they?
Important block by Hayden
Important block from Hayden, who gets down low & sticks out a leg to block Berry’s effort in the area after the Luton player had controlled a cross on his chest & then fired goalwards
Half-time change for Luton
Harry Cornick replaces Pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu.
Superb attendance
Incredible for a cup game.
Second half is under way
Here we go...
Half-time stats
These make for pretty reading!
Newcastle emerge for the second half
Here we go...
Heavens opening at St James' Park
Heavens have now opened at SJP. Rain is going straight into the press box, so typing in the second half may be impaired, for which I apologise in advance.
Excuses, excuses, Chris...
Player of the half?
Jacob Murphy.
Perez may have scored both goals, but it is Murphy who has looked the most dangerous for United. He appears motivated, and is keen to impress in front of the home crowd.
Moment of the half?
It has to be Perez’s first, and for two reasons. First of all it gave United the lead, from which they have built, but also because in the immediate aftermath captain Lascelles limped off injured. Both moments were significant, but United will hope that their skipper’s withdrawal is merely a precaution.
Lee Ryder's half-time verdict
Well this has been a sight for sore eyes. Newcastle in full control and cruising here. Yes, it is against a League Two side but confidence is flowing here. The only downside is Lascelles’ knock. Fourth round here we come? Ask me after 60 minutes! This is Newcastle after all!
HALF-TIME: Newcastle 3-0 Luton
Chris Waugh’s verdict...
Three goals inside nine minutes have put Magpies on course for the fourth round. Professional performance from Newcastle, but one concern is Lascelles - who was forced off with an injury after the half-hour mark.
Luton still fighting
But Berry misses a good opportunity.
Luke Berry heads over for Luton just before the break.
