The weather will warm up over the weekend but two days of freezing temperatures earlier in the week left dead fish washing up on the beach, Volusia County Beach Safety and Ocean Rescue officials said Saturday.
More fish appeared on the sands of New Smyrna Beach Saturday morning, but on Friday hundreds of the dead sea creatures washed ashore, said Beach Safety and Ocean Rescue Capt. Tamra Malphurs.
"They washed up yesterday (Friday) morning near the jetty in New Smyrna Beach," Malphurs said. "Most likely it's due to the cold weather conditions. They were mainly jacks and catfish."
Overnight Wednesday into Thursday, temperatures fell just below the freezing point across most of Volusia but it's going to get warmer, forecasters say. On Sunday, a high of 61 is expected under sunny skies with warmth gradually edging up to 74 degrees on Thursday and Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.
