The UMass ice hockey team cut a two-goal deficit to one in the third period, but couldn’t produce the equalizer.
Yale added an empty-net goal and defeated the Minutemen, 5-3, Friday in New Haven, Connecticut.
After falling behind, 1-0, Jack Suter and Oliver Chau scored back-to-back goals to put UMass (9-8-0) up 2-1 after the first period.
But Yale scored three straight to take control at 4-2, 9:19 into the third period.
Jake Gaudet scored to get the Minutemen within one at 4-3 with 8:50 left, but Corbin Kaczperski (22 saves) prevented further damage.
Matt Murray stopped 33 shots for UMass, which is at UMass-Lowell, Saturday at 7 p.m.
Amherst 4, Bowdoin 2 — Nick Bondra scored twice, while Thomas Lindstrom and Pieter von Steinbergs each had one goal as the Mammoths (5-3-3, 3-0-3 NESCAC) won on the road.
Connor Girard made 32 saves.
Trinity 69, Amherst 63 — Grant Robinson had 19 points, while Joseph Schneider and Eric Sellew each had 12, but the Mammoths (7-4, 0-1 NESCAC) lost their third straight with the road setback.
Amherst 49, Trinity 31 — The top-ranked Mammoths (12-0, 1-0 NESCAC) returned from their West Coast trip early Friday morning, then overcame a slow start to beat the Bantams.
Emma McCarthy led Amherst with 13 points, while Hannah Fox had 12 points and Hannah Hackley 11.
Madeline Eck had nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
Middlebury 4, Amherst 2 — Alex Toupal and Emma Griese each scored, but the Mammoths (5-5-0, 2-3-0 NESCAC) fell at home.
