MATHEWS – The Central Lafourche girls soccer team dominated possession of the ball and fired tons of shots at South Terrebonne on Friday night in District 5-II action.
The Lady Trojans got a pair of goals from Claire Hodson to earn a 2-0 victory at Trojans Stadium.
“We played really well. We possessed the ball well and switched the field,” Lady Trojans coach Jude Blanchard said. “We did everything we’ve been working on in practice, except finishing. We still got to improve on that.”
“Coach Ben Landry and I decided we wanted to put our talent on defense, and they did an excellent job,” Lady Gators coach Archie Adams said. “Considering Central is such a talented team, our defense played amazing.”
Central Lafourche (14-3 overall, 3-0 district) occupied the ball on offense with lots of short, quick passes around the field. The Lady Trojans sent a barrage of hots at Lady Gators goalkeeper Savanah Anderson (20 saves), who stonewalled everything until the 24th minute.
On a Central Lafourche throw-in, Hodson headed the ball 10 yards just inside the left goalpost for a 1-0 lead they would take into halftime.
“We’ve been working hard as a team on the offensive side. We have really fast girls up top. We were lucky to find Claire on those chances,” Blanchard said. “We’ve had a platoon of goal scorers this season, but she’s been hot lately.”
“Savanah’s played well all year for us. This game would be a lot more lopsided if not her play, and also our defense,” Adams said. “Our defense did a good job shielding and giving her some help back there.”
Hodson scored her second goal in the 54th minute. Mary Foret sent a cross that hit Hodson in stride on a 3-yard shot into the net.
South Terrebonne's offense could only muster two shots on goal. The Lady Gators (5-7, 1-3 district) best score opportunity came in the 78th minute. Maci Vauclin outraced Central Lafourche’s defense and blasted a shot at goalkeeper Addie Chauvin (two saves) who made the save.
“The defense is starting to gel and play well together. I thought the back four played really well as a unit,” Blanchard said.
“We moved Macy up to the frond at the end of the game. We tried to make some runs, see what we can do,” Adams said. “We had a couple of good shots on goal, but it didn’t happen. The girls carried out the game plan to a t. We just didn’t get enough shots on offense.”
Adams said he believes his team will improve markedly by the time they face Central Lafourche again later this month.
“In my opinion, they are the toughest team in our district,” he said. “I think the second go around we’ll play them a little tighter, maybe, hopefully, have a chance to get some goals.”
