Fmr. Indian Chief Minister jailed for fraudulently scamming people’s money

New Delhi, India: Former chief minister of Bihar ‘Lalu Prasad Yadav’ has been sentenced to 3 and half years in jail with a Rs. 10 lakh (INR) fine by Ranchi Court.

The former Chief Minister is currently in Birsa Munda Central Jail, Ranchi.

Why was he jailed?

Indian court convicted Lalu Prasad and 15 others for fraudulently withdrawing Rs 84.5 lakh (INR) from the Deoghar district treasury in Bihar between 1990 and 1994.

Lalu was previously sentenced to five years in prison after he was convicted in the first of five fodder scam cases in 2013.

He is the leader of ‘Rashtriya Janata Dal’ (RJD) -an Indian Political Party.

Faith in the Judiciary

Lalu Prasad’s son Tejashwi Yadav had spoken to Indian media moments before the sentence was announced.

Tejashwi had stated that he has faith in the judiciary.

“The judiciary performed its duty. We will go to the high court after studying the sentence and apply for bail,” he said.

Meanwhile yesterday (January 5) the RJD leader and former Chief Minister sought a minimum punishment by citing health issues.

“I have no role in this scam directly; consider minimum punishment keeping in view my age and health grounds,” said Lalu in his plea.

He has been convicted in one of the cases of the fodder scam, wherein Rs. 900 crore (INR) from the Bihar exchequer was siphoned off under the pretext of purchasing fodder for livestock during the ’80s and ’90s.
