Alexander Zverev SWEARS and THROWS racket in clash with Roger Federer

ALEXANDER ZVEREV was unable to contain his anger at the Hopman Cup final chair umpire after what he saw as an incorrect call during his match against Roger Federer.

Zverev beat Federer in the same competition last year, winning two of the three tie-breaks the pair contested.

The pair once again needed a breaker to separate them in the first set of their first 2018 clash and the German once again triumphed to inflict Federer’s first set defeat of the week.

However, he soon found himself a break of serve down in the second and having to serve to save another break point at 0-2.

The 6ft 6in Zverev thought he had cleared the danger when his serve landed on the line and Federer’s return flew wide.

Alexander Zverev repeatedly questioned the chair umpire's decision to re-play the point

But the line-judge had called the serve out only for the chair umpire to overrule the decision immediately.

Zverev felt Federer’s return had been made in good faith and that he himself deserved the point, walking towards the other side of the court.

But instead, he was told to re-take the first serve, a decision he felt was completely unnecessary.

After a disagreement with the umpire, he missed the first serve and Federer capitalised to break.

The 20-year-old continued to argue after the game was over and threw his racket at his bag on the way to his chair for the change of ends, receiving a warning for an audible obscenity for his troubles.

And the anger did not appear to improve Zverev’s game: he went on to lose the second set 6-0 in just 22 minutes.
