Cheers – Try, try again … and again
The Lafourche School Board is again considering a measure that could reduce its size from 15 to nine members.
Unfortunately, a majority of the board members have blocked similar efforts in the past. But there is always hope.
At a time when the school system has had to cut back services and even reduce teaching positions, it only makes sense for the board to save where it can.
One obvious place it can save taxpayer money is by adopting a nine-member format.
Doing so would mean it could use districts that are already being used by the Parish Council. And it would save tens of thousands of dollars a year.
Arguments against the board reduction sound hollow and self-serving, coming as they do from board members. Nine is plenty of members to adequately serve the electorate just as the nine Parish Council members are able to do.
A reduction in force has been forced on the educators of Lafourche Parish. Taxpayers should expect nothing less from the politicians overseeing the entire system.
Cheers – A great event
The Southern Louisiana Boat, Sport and RV Show is taking place today and Sunday, and you have a chance to participate in a great, local event.

Jeers – No laughing matter
The Bayou Cane Fire Department found itself responding to a series of dumpster fires over the past week – the results of fireworks pranks, the firefighters suspect.
This is the time of year when fireworks are plenty and when some are tempted to stray outside the bounds of the laws regulating their use.
In Terrebonne Parish, fireworks are illegal. And they are dangerous everywhere if they are handled improperly.
If you see anyone playing with fireworks or engaging in any potentially dangerous or damaging behavior, please alert local law enforcement. You might be saving homes or businesses or even lives.
