As more salacious details emerged from excerpts of the now-released tell-all book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, a supposed excerpt was posted Thursday night claiming President Trump grumbled that White House televisions did not receive “the gorilla channel.”
The except was a hoax, posted by a Twitter user whose handle is @pixelatedboat. But many Twitter users fell for the satirical post, which was written in a similar tone and manner as authentic excerpts from the book, which went on sale Friday.
The false excerpt said that Trump complained the television in his bedroom was broken because it did not receive the “gorilla channel” and said Trump appeared to believe he could watch a channel featuring gorilla content at any hour.
“To appease Trump, White House staff compiled a number of gorilla documentaries into a makeshift gorilla channel, broadcast into Trump’s bedroom from a hastily-constructed transmission tower on the South Lawn,” the fictitious excerpt read. “However, Trump was unhappy with the channel they had created, moaning that it was ‘boring’ because ‘the gorillas aren’t fighting.’”
“Staff edited out all the parts of the documentaries where gorillas weren’t hitting each other, and at last the president was satisfied,” the faked excerpt continued. “‘On some days he’ll watch the gorilla channel for 17 hours straight,’ an insider told me.”

The passage adds that Trump kneels close to the television screen and “says encouraging things to the gorillas, like ‘the way you hit that other gorilla was good,’” according to the fictional inside account.
Many Twitter users presumed that the post was authentic, including Internet personality Eric Garland, who admitted he “got totally punked.” The reaction from the post prompted Twitter user @pixelatedboat to admit in a post less than 90 minutes later that the excerpt was a parody.
Dammit guys, I got totally punked on the Gorilla Channel thing - but when you've already gotten to "eating KFC in bed," I mean, we're through the looking glass.
Thanks to all who called me out. We keep it clean and Deza-free at Game Theory HQ. ????— Eric Garland (@ericgarland) January 5, 2018
Fire and Fury, written by Michael Wolff, has sent shockwaves throughout the political world this week as excerpts started to be released. Content from the book led Trump to denounce former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon after it was revealed Bannon said unflattering things about Trump’s family.
The book’s integrity has been questioned by critics, who have pointed out several inconsistencies in the reporting.
Henry Holt & Co., the book’s publisher, moved the release date up by four days after excerpts emerged that prompted Trump's lawyer to submit a cease and desist letter to the publisher.
