Oppn raises doubts over ‘road scam probe’ action

Mumbai : The Opposition party leaders of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has slammed Ajoy Mehta, the civic commissioner on the action taken against the guilty proven engineers of roads department involved in construction and repair of bad quality roads in BMC limits. Rais Shaikh the Group Leader of Samajwadi Party (SP) of BMC said, “After two years the probe report and action on guilty engineers have been taken, however, only four engineers been removed from service. Massive corruption has taken place in roads project but as compared to the mass corruption, the action taken is just minimal. Also, the action seems to be an eyewash.”

In addition, he added BMC incurred crores of rupees losses paid to the contractors for doing shoddy work, hence BMC was supposed to do the recovery from these contractors, but it is not revealing how much money has been recovered so far. Also, the legal department of BMC is shielding the tainted contractors as from last one year in Bombay High Court (HC) hearings only on tainted contractors bail application is going on.

Meanwhile, he added only taking action against civic engineers will not do justice, but the tainted or blacklisted contractors who still successfully have managed to get road contracts with some other name and freely roaming near roads engineers’ cabin is shameful. “The tainted contractors’ pictures should be displayed on gates of BMC building and restrict their entries will only send a strong message to citizens that BMC is taking action against corrupt officers and contractors,” said Shaikh.
