Lillian Mary (Dmitruk) Houser, 88, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center while listening to her favorite song, "Unforgettable." As per Lillian's wishes, there will be a private family service on Monday, Jan. 8. Private family burial will follow in the Czech National Cemetery.
Lillian was born at home in Cedar Rapids on Aug. 9, 1929, the daughter of Michael and Irene (Kren) Dmitruk. She married Donald L. Houser on Oct. 29, 1949, in Cedar Rapids. Lillian worked at JCPenney after school, and after graduating from McKinley High School she worked for Weaver Witwer at the Warehouse on Third Street, McKesson & Robbins Wholesale Drugs, and then stayed at home to raise their children for the next 15 years. Lillian belonged to the American Legion Post Auxiliary and VFW Post 788 Auxiliary for over 20 years. She enjoyed dancing, putting jigsaw puzzles together, playing knock poker with family members, watching game shows and movies, playing bingo and going to the casino.
Lillian is survived by her children, James Michael (Dr. Arleen Zahn-Houser) Houser, Joan (Bill) Dyal and Judy Cooper (Donald Lerch), all of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Virgil "Bob" (Rita) Houser of Banning, Calif.; her sister-in-law, Margaret Wells of Des Moines; as well as nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, who died July 5, 1996; her brother, Henry (Grace) Dmitruk; and sisters, Helen (Fred) Lorenzen and Jennie (Frank) Stastny.
