Central High School sophomore Sakya White scored 26 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in a 53-35 victory over Selma on Friday.
White, a 6-1 forward, accounted for 11 of Central’s 15 points in the fourth quarter. Junior forward Terrya Richardson finished with eight points.
“I made sure I did what I was supposed to do,” White said.
In its first game since Dec. 23, Class 5A fourth-ranked Central played without two of its starting guards who are out with injuries. Falcons coach Michael Rivers called timeout with the game scoreless and 5:19 remaining in the first quarter. The break allowed Central to refocus en route to a win over the Class 6A, ninth-ranked Saints.
“We got off to a slow start simply because we were putting people in and out of place,” Rivers said. “We had to adjust tonight playing different positions.”
The Saints made a run in the fourth quarter to come within 10 points, but the Falcons' defensive pressure proved too much for Selma down the stretch.
“We tried to get them settled down and settled in,” Rivers said. “Everybody is going to make a run, but if we our lead is 10 points, we are good because we can play defense.”
Selma’s Kynadra Lewis finished with 16 points.
Central (13-4) travels to Hillcrest on Tuesday.
