Woman urged boy not to report $100 theft, Warwick police say

WARWICK, R.I. — What happens at the Burlington Coat Factory, stays at the Burlington Coat Factory.

Or at least that’s what one woman hoped when a young boy watched her snatch a $100 bill off the floor and shove it into her purse.

The Warwick police are looking for the woman who they have dubbed “The 2017 Grandmother of the Year.” In a video posted to the department’s Facebook account an older woman, dressed in a track suit, sees money fall from another woman’s pocket in the aisle at the Burlington Coat Factory.

She reaches down, grabs the bill and puts it into her purse. When the child looked on in awe, she put her finger over lips “to warn a juvenile male not to say anything,” police wrote in the Facebook post.

His mouth hangs open, and as the police said: “his reaction says it all.”

The police did not say when the incident happened and did not immediately answer a phone message requesting additional information.

In the Facebook post, detectives encourage anyone who can identify the woman to contact the police at (401) 468-4249 or to send a Facebook message.

While no one seems to have offered any credible tips on the Facebook post, some users expressed outrage, calling the woman "disgraceful" and "disheartening." One user urged police to contact the Department of Children, Youth and Families.

Others, it seemed, appreciated the woman's hustle.

"Finders keepers!" many wrote.
