1 injured in fire at RHA high-rise in Rockford

ROCKFORD — A woman was taken to the hospital after a fire broke out early Saturday morning in a Rockford Housing Authority high-rise apartment building on the city’s northwest side, according to fire officials.

Rockford firefighters were called at 12:37 a.m. Saturday to Olesen Plaza, 511 N. Church St., after a fire started in an apartment on the seventh floor, according to a Fire Department incident report. The first firefighters arrived in four minutes and found smoke on the seventh and upper floors, but the fire already had been extinguished, District Chief Marc Wortman said.

“All the fire was contained in the kitchen area,” he said. “It wasn’t big enough to set off the (building’s) sprinklers.”

The woman living in that unit was taken to Swedish American Hospital, 1401 E. State St., because of the levels of carbon monoxide in her body, but she is expected to recover, Wortman said. None of the residents, including this woman, were displaced from the 151-unit building. Olesen Plaza houses senior citizens and those in need of supportive housing assistance, according to RHA.

Damage to the one apartment was estimated at $1,000, largely to kitchen cabinetry, Wortman said.
