VARANASI: Varanasi continued to be under the spell of a cold wave and dense fog on Friday. As per the data released by the Indian Meteorological department, the minimum temperature recorded on Friday was 5 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature was recorded as 12.6 degrees Celsius.

The city shivered under the effect of cold weather and fog which enveloped the city, specially in the morning and evening. In view of the weather conditions, the district administration has announced that all schools in city would remain closed till January 7. Weather experts expect the cold wave and fog to prevail in the city in the next few days as well. Allahabad recorded its lowest minimum temperature of this year's winter season on Friday at 5.7 degrees Celsius. However, foggy conditions and a windy day marred the relief brought by sunshine.

On Friday, the maximum temperature was recorded as 14.1 degrees Celsius. Locals woke up to skies enveloped by dense fog and the visibility (minimum) was as low as 50 meters.

"These conditions would prevail for the next couple of days as the upper Himalayan region is witnessing heavy snowfall. We expect an improvement in the weather after 48 hours but the temperature would again dip around January 14," said faculty member of Allahabad University's department of geography Prof AR Siddiqui.
