CONCORD — A woman was driving approximately 100 mph before her vehicle overturned at Highway 242 just south of Highway 4, causing a collision that sent three others to hospital on Saturday, authorities said.

The 35-year-old woman, who lives in Martinez, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana and possibly a controlled substance, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident involved five vehicles and came just days after the use of recreational use marijuana became legal in California.

The woman’s name was not disclosed.

One injured individual was transported to Kaiser Permanente in Walnut Creek, CHP Officer Brandon Correia said. The other two injured individuals were transported to the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

Each suffered major injuries. Their injuries, however, are not considered life-threatening, Correia said.

He said the CHP initially received “multiple” calls from witnesses that a white Ford Explorer — the vehicle that the woman was allegedly driving — was traveling about 100 mph on Interstate 680 before she apparently lost control on northbound Highway 242 at eastbound Highway 4.

The woman’s vehicle overturned and crossed the median, ending up on westbound Highway 4, where other vehicles collided into it, Correia said.

The collision was reported at 10:52 a.m., according to the CHP. The roadway was reopened at 12:43 p.m.
