Chiefs, SuperSport play out to draw

2018-01-06 20:24

Mbombela - SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs played to a 0-0 league draw at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday night.

Even though there were no goals, it was a highly entertaining affair played in front of a near capacity crowd.

The first half was a thrilling, free-flowing contest with both sides looking dangerous in attack although some committed defending meant there were not too many clear-cut chances.

It was the same scenario in the second stanza – plenty of riveting action, but not too many openings as again both sets of defences put in brilliant performances.

Amakhosi enjoyed the early chances as Hendrik Ekstein was played in by Gustavo Paez before sending a volley just wide, before Paez went on a surging run and fired a 25-yard shot high and off target.

The action continued at break-neck speed with SuperSport also looking dangerous on attack. They were in with a chance when Aubrey Modiba beat the off-side trap just after the half hour mark, but Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso made a brilliant tackle to stop the cross reaching Teboho Mokoena.

Willard Katsande also came to Chiefs' aid in their own box when he cleared a set-piece off his own goal-line.

Katsande looked to be in on goal in the 43rd minute, only to be denied by another fine tackle, this time from his former teammate Morgan Gould.

The Zimbabwean international also had the first chance after the restart, but headed over from close range after an inswinging free-kick from Siphiwe Tshabalala in the 46th minute.

There was no let up to the relentless pace, much to the enjoyment of a very good crowd in Nelspruit, and more chances came as Sipho Mbule went close with a free-kick before Teenage Hadebe narrowly missed with a volley at the other end of the park.

A brilliant pass from Ekstein then released Joseph Molangoane clean in on goal, but Matsatsantsa keeper Reyaad Pieterse made an outstanding block, before Jeremy Brockie had the ball in the net for SuperSport, only for his effort to be correctly ruled off-sides.

Brockie had another opportunity 17 minutes from time, but sent a header wide, while Glamour Boys keeper Itumeleng Khune made a good save on Modiba's free-kick in the 86th minute, the final clear chance on goal of the night.
