Federer and Switzerland team-mate Belinda Bencic beat Germany’s Zverev and Angelique Kerber 4-3(3) 4-2 in the deciding mixed doubles final.

But after the quartet were handed their winners and runners-up trophies, Zverev took to the podium to give a speech about the tournament.

And he instantly turned to Federer to tell him to relax.

The comment came very tongue-in-cheek as he claimed that the 36-year-old’s dominance in the sport was stopping younger players like himself winning tournaments.

“Once against Switzerland takes it all,” Zverev said.

“We have seen so many times in the tennis world now. Roger has said it before but relax a little bit.

“We want to win something as well.

“It makes us young guys look bad.

“Hopefully we can be back next year and take the title away from Switzerland.

“That would be very enjoyable for me.”

Federer went a set down to Zverev in the opener but battled back to win 6-7 (4-7) 6-0 6-2 and give Switzerland a 1-0 lead.

Kerber then beat Bencic 6-4 6-1 to level the tie before the Swiss term emerged victorious in the doubles.

The Hopman Cup is the warm-up tournament for the Australian Open, which gets underway on January 15.
