Arsenal launch new attempt to sign West Brom’s Jonny Evans but they face one challenge

ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger has reignited his interest in signing West Brom defender Jonny Evans, according to reports.

The Gunners tried to lure the centre-back to the Emirates Stadium in the summer but were unable to meet the club’s valuation.

Manchester City tabled an £18million bid last year, which was knocked back by chiefs at the Hawthorns, and they are set to challenge Arsenal to his signature again this time around.

The report adds that City have also made an enquiry into Evans’ availability but no formal offer has been made.

Evans has 18 months left on his current deal with West Brom but looks highly likely to leave the club this month.

Jonny Evans GETTY

Jonny Evans is being targeted by Arsenal and Man City.

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal and Man City are set to go head-to-head for Evans.

However, it is thought he would be offered regular football with the Gunners, which may sound more appetising than a rotatory position with City.

West Brom boss Alan Pardew has already made plans for life without Evans.

Last month Pardew revealed that he does not expect his defender to reject a move away.

Arsene WengerGETTY

Arsene Wenger reportedly wants to take Evans to the Emirates Stadium.

"I have always thought that you would be slightly naive in your job if you didn't try to cover all the barriers here, the options that might happen and might not happen," said Pardew.

"So there is a scenario that Jonny Evans might move. For sure I have looked at that.

"There is a scenario that Jonny doesn't move. There is a scenario that someone else moves. What happens if we get another injury to let's say Chris Brunt, then I have him, (James) Morrison and (Nacer) Chadli missing, how is that going to work?

"I have to cover all those and with [technical director] Nicky Hammond, someone I know well and who is brilliant at his job, I am pretty sure we have it all covered. If we do some business in January we will be doing it for the right reasons."
