Sunderland agree deal with Chelsea for highly-rated defender - report

SUNDERLAND have reportedly reached an agreement with Chelsea to loan defender Jake Clarke-Salter until the end of the season.

Sunderland are having a torrid time in the Championship and sit rock bottom, having won just four times all season.

Chris Coleman is set to be given funds this month to reshape the squad and stave off the threat of back-to-back relegations.

And according to Sky Sports, Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter will be the Welshman’s first appointment.

The 20-year-old, who has made two appearances for the Blues, is set to join on loan until the end of the season.

“Sunderland will finalise a loan deal for defender Jake Clarke-Salter over the weekend, after he’s featured for Chelsea at Norwich tonight,” Sky reporter Keith Downie tweeted.

“The 20-year-old will be Chris Coleman’s first signing.

“Jake Clarke-Salter is a centre back.

“He’s made two first team appearances for Chelsea, with John Terry saying he’s good enough to one day become a first team regular.

“Will sign on loan with Sunderland until the summer.”

Clarke-Salter spent time on loan with Bristol Rovers last season, making 12 appearances in League One.

He also impressed last summer as part of the England Under-20 World Cup-winning side in South Korea.

Stamford Bridge legend Terry has spoken highly of the young centre-half in the past and claimed he sees him as his natural successor.

“Jake has a great attitude," Terry said.

"I remember watching him a couple of years ago being in control of the game and a really vocal player.

"He reminds me a bit of myself.

“He is doing great and I hope he goes on to take my position and get in the first team.”
