A man has been arrested over the stabbing murder of Australian Kai Foley in Gothenburg, Sweden in the lead-up to Christmas, local media reports say.

The suspect is 25 years old and was arrested on Friday (local time), prosecutor Niklas Hogden told Swedish newspaper GT.

Police found Mr Foley, 30, with multiple stab wounds to his back and stomach while patrolling Odinsplatsen - a public space in the middle of Gothenburg - in the early hours of December 20.

Investigators said Mr Foley had left an apartment about 40 minutes before he was found, and had managed to walk several hundred metres after the deadly wounds were inflicted.

He was rushed to hospital, but later died from his injuries.

Prosecutor Hogden told GT investigations were ongoing, but at this stage there were no other suspects.

Local prosecutors said the suspect was not known to Mr Foley, Swedish New Agency TT reported.

After Mr Foley's death was made public, family and friends described him as a "gentle giant" and a "beautiful, fine young man".

Mr Foley had recently lived in Melbourne, and had moved to Sweden a couple of months ago to be with his girlfriend.
