Simon Humble, Network Rail’s scheme project manager, said: “This investment is vital to the introduction of a new state-of-the-art train fleet on the East Coast main line and also improves the station for passengers.

“We are committed to delivering this work considerately and our programme is designed to complete these enhancements as quickly as possible while also minimising inconvenience for rail users and local businesses.”

A section of Queen Street car park is being used as a site compound for the work and the number of spaces available will be reduced while the project is completed.

There will also be a road closure in place each Saturday night from January 21 until April 28 between Gray Street and Brook Street junction from 21:00 on the Saturday until 09:00 on Sunday.

The project is one of 10 being delivered across the Highland and East Coast main lines in Scotland as part of a Department for Transport-funded upgrade to enable the introduction of Virgin East Coast’s new Azuma trains.
