Canton City firefighters say the blaze began after a man tried to heat some potentially frozen pipes in the basement of his Seventh Street NW home.
CANTON A man and three young children were displaced from their Seventh Street NW home Friday by a fire that firefighters say began when the man tried to heat some potentially frozen pipes in the basement.
Canton City Battallion Fire Chief Dan Reed said it appeared that some items in the basement caught fire as the man tried to thaw the pipes at 2812 Seventh St. NW. The fire, which began just before 5 p.m. Friday, spread through the walls to the first floor of the two-story home, causing $10,000 worth of damage to the home’s contents and $20,000 worth of damage to the structure, Reed said. Records from the Stark County Auditor's office show that the home was built in 1912 and valued at $39,700.
Reed said the man and the children, ages 5, 6, and 10, were not injured and went to stay with family or friends. About 25 firefighters responded to the blaze.
While the fire took roughly 10 minutes to extinguish, Reed said a gas leak caused some firefighters to remain on scene until gas company officials arrived.
