The tourism sector is comparatively new in terms of international standards, with true commercial activity started after the end of World War 2.
Creation of Tourism industry
Previous to that, there were few specific activities, as shown by the recently renovated Grand Pacific Hotel.
An establishment developed to serve the cruise liner passengers and a modicum of accommodation facilities in the west, located around the Port of Lautoka. There was dearth of real organized Industry with specifically designed products for the visitors who are keen to experience the tropical environment of Fiji.
A very good international airport was developed after the war, and Trans Pacific flights landed in Fiji to get refreshed as well as refuel, with passengers getting off to stroll for few days before boarding another aircraft to carry on their flight to their final destination.
The opportunities provided by the industry of tourism succeeded in attracting certain type of people, group, both men and women, who liked to take care of the tourists and offering services they were keen to pay for developed around the kernel of the industry.
