The Lake County administration building expansion project is on schedule, county administrator Jason Boyd said.
“The project continues to move on time, on budget,” Boyd said. “We’re looking at an early ’19 — give or take with the winter here — opening. So far, so good.”
Boyd said they’ve had no major unknowns on the site and they’re “out of the ground, so we think we’ve passed that trigger point where we might run into some things.”
“Steel will go up as soon as the weather breaks, these guys aren’t messing around,” Boyd said.
The new administration building is being built at 85 N. Park Place in Painesville and will be connected to the existing building at 105 Main St. The existing building is also getting some renovation work as part of the project.
The new building will centralize some of the county departments currently scattered throughout the area, such as the administrative offices of the Engineer’s Office. Other departments on the move include Utilities and Stormwater Management.
“We’re really consolidating a lot of our offices and agencies here to kind of a unified campus with the ultimate goal of a customer-friendly, efficient government,” Boyd previous said.
At the Lake County commissioners’ most recent meeting, the board approved a $15.4 million contract with construction manager A.M. Higley for the “shell and core package.”
“There’s a couple more packages to go, but this is the last significant package,” Boyd said. “This is basically the balance of the building that is being constructed for the new administration facility. This includes from window glazing to brick, everything exterior — lighting, HVAC and so on.”
Boyd said there are about 15 subcontractors that will be working under A.M. Higley’s guidance. About half of those firms are Lake County-based, “which is always good to hear for the local economy,” Boyd said.
The commissioners’ approval allows A.M. Higley to engage in formal contracts with those subcontractors and begin the ordering process and engineering drawings, Boyd said.
