Tornado’s Stone poised to place at tourney

CLOVIS, Calif. — North Medford’s Julian Stone picked up three wins in the prestigious Doc Buchanan Invitational Friday and is one victory away from placing in the top eight.

Wrestling in the 220-pound division, Stone, who is the only Black Tornado wrestler remaining heading into the final day of the two-day tourney, was pinned in his first match before bouncing back with consecutive pins of his own.

In his third match, Stone pulled out a 3-1 decision in overtime to improve to 22-4 on the season.

“He definitely has a good shot at winning state this year the way he’s progressing,” North Medford coach Phillip Lopez said.

Also for North Medford, 120-pounder Chase Mitchell went 2-2, while Enrique Jaime (113), Cole Zoller (132), Matthew Bryant (145) and Thomas Hamilton (152) each went 1-2.

BEAST OF THE NORTH: At Anderson, Calif., South Medford was in second place among 36 teams after the first day of the tournament, right on the heels of leader West Valley of California, 106-104, after four wrestlers went 3-0 to reach the semifinals.

Killian Cosgrove, a freshman competing at 126 pounds, pulled off a 7-6 victory that came down to the wire in the quarterfinals, joining seniors Cole Schumack (170), Ryan Beck (182) and Michael Cormier (220) in the semis.

The Panthers still boast nearly their entire team alive in the tournament — despite losing several close matches in the quarterfinals — and were poised to pile up points today in the consolation brackets.

Swimming

MWL THREE-WAY: At Springfield, Ashland beat Crater and Springfield to come out on top at the Willamalane Park Swim Center.

The Grizzlies finished with 112 points, while Springfield earned 101 and Crater 51. Springfield won the girls meet with 149 points, while Ashland placed second (72) and Crater third (43).

Setting personal records for the Ashland boys were Baylor Wiggins in the 200 freestyle (1 minute, 58.54 seconds) and Chris Frownfelter in the 100 backstroke (58.95).

In girls action, Ashland’s Becca McMonagle placed second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 200 individual medley, while teammates Kelsey Powell (first, 6:38.57) and Maya Livni (fourth, 7:11.34) both had PRs in the 500 freestyle.
