DAYTONA BEACH — Temperatures dipped below freezing again across Volusia and Flagler counties on Friday morning, but not quite as cold as forecast.
In Daytona Beach, it dropped to freezing between 5 and 6 a.m., dropping as low as 31 degrees just before 7 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. The wind chill dropped as low as 24 degrees. By 9 a.m., the temperature had warmed to 35 degrees.
Temperatures were forecast to fall as low as 27 in Daytona Beach, with colder temperatures in rural areas on the west side of the two counties.
At the Flagler County Airport in Bunnell on Friday, temperatures dropped to freezing just after 2 a.m., then dropped to 30 degrees before 6 a.m. At 9 a.m., the temperature in Flagler was still 30 degrees, with a wind chill of 23 degrees.
In DeLand, the temperature dipped briefly to freezing for a few minutes just before 1 a.m., then warmed slightly to 34 before dropping to freezing again around 4 a.m. The mercury dipped as low as 28, with a wind chill of 21 around 7:30 a.m.
Shelters opened again across the two-county area on Thursday night, providing a warm refuge for the area's homeless population in Daytona Beach, Port Orange, New Smyrna Beach, Deltona, DeLand and Bunnell.
The effects of two nights of freezing temperatures already are showing on many lawns, with some of the more tropical shrubs and flowers looking wilted.
Today's forecast from the Weather Service calls for a high of 51, then a third night of freezing temperatures in the low 30s.
After a sunny and slightly warmer day on Saturday, rain enters the forecast for the next week, with highs in the 60s and lows in the 50s. By Wednesday high temperatures are forecast to return to the 70s.
In Northwest Volusia, fern-growers spent a long night staffing pumps to protect their tender crops.
Temperatures across Florida this week dropped lower than they had in years.
Freeze warnings were issued Thursday as far south as the northern edge of the Everglades, with wind chill advisories across South Florida, including Naples and Palm Beach.
Rough surf from the offshore low pressure system that some meteorologists have referred to as a “bomb cyclone,” continued to erode local beaches and damage dune walkovers.
In Flagler Beach, city officials said they’ll be undertaking beach cleanups similar to those that occurred after Hurricane Matthew. The city is seeking volunteers and plans to announce cleanup dates soon, stated a city news release.
In Volusia County, more than half-dozen beach walkovers were restored on Thursday, said Jessica Winterwerp, the county’s coastal division director.
Additional minor erosion occurred Thursday, but the county learned the Department of Transportation was going to have a contractor bring in material to shore up the eroding dunes along the right-of-way of State Road A1A north of Ormond Beach.
The county was able to replace some of the conservation poles that washed away on the beach this week and reopened an area from Beach Street south to the jetty in Ponce Inlet to driving, said Capt. Tammy Malphurs of Beach Safety and Ocean Rescue. However, because of the continued high tides and the number of poles that washed away, she said most of the beach will be closed to driving throughout the weekend.
