Lee has impressive debut

IOWA CITY — The Iowa wrestling team scored bonus points in nine matches, including six by fall, and defeated Michigan State, 49-6, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Friday night.

In front of 8,486 fans, Iowa true freshman Spencer Lee made his collegiate debut with a 46-second pin of Rayvon Foley at 125 pounds.

"Coaches always tell you to capitalize what's there, and that's what was there so I went with it," Lee said. "I'm just glad that I get to compete in front of the best fans in the world and the country, and I am super excited to be a Hawkeye."

The fall sparked a run of bonus points Iowa had not seen this season. Six Hawkeyes won by falls, two more won by major decisions and a ninth match was won by technical fall.

Paul Glynn (133) followed Lee with a fall in 6:13. Brandon Sorensen (149), Michael Kemmerer (157), Cash Wilcke (197) and Sam Stoll (285) also recorded falls for Iowa. Joey Gunther (174) and Mitch Bowman (184) won major decisions and Alex Marinelli (165) won the technical fall.

The seventh-ranked Hawkeyes improved to 4-0 in the Big 10 and 8-0 overall. It sets up a matchup of undefeated teams on Jan. 14 when No. 3 Oklahoma State visits Iowa City.
