Amid a news cycle that swirled with all the crippling force of the bomb cyclone, a humble poet practiced her craft.

"A message to Mueller," she began, furnishing her masterwork with a preface so pithy it leaves readers unprepared for the devastating string of rhymes that follows.

"Stay strong and stand tall. Continue to investigate them all. You are indeed answering the people's call. The Kremlin Klan is going to fall. Around you the Democrats are building a wall. We look forward to the day, to prison they will all be hauled."

So went the poem Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., posted to her Twitter account on Wednesday, artfully beaming a ray of confidence to special counsel Robert Mueller as he continues investigating alleged Russian collusion.

There's a simplicity to this poem that's almost childlike, as though the author sought deliberately to build a tension between its easy rhymes and dark content. Why rhyme tall and all and call and fall and wall — surely, the reader would assume, a United States congresswoman is capable of more — if not in an effort to give the poem the voice of a child? Perhaps the technique seeks to convey that Russian collusion is so simple a matter, so clear to see, the truth is discernible even to less sophisticated observers.

Without any line breaks, the poem rambles on much like the very investigation it describes, cleverly underscoring the depth and sprawl of Mueller's endless quest.

And why leave it without a title? To emphasize that we cannot yet predict the investigation's outcome; to show no headline has emerged that can capture the extent of what will be discovered.

Though at first read it may sound simple, Waters' poem ultimately packs a powerful punch.
