Adams, 61, celebrates his 25th Lakeside anniversary today as he plays in the opening match of the BDO World Darts Championship against No2 seed Mark McGeeney.

And there is no sign of a farewell for the three-times champion and biggest star of the Frimley Green event.

“I will carry on for as long as I can, I shall keep going and fully intend to play well into my 70s,” said Adams. “I love the event, the venue, the TV, the crowd, it is like home from home.

“What keeps me driven is that I like to win. I don’t always win but I really enjoy playing the game and I have met so many people over the years. Unfortunately some of them are not with us any more but I keep meeting new people all the time.

“I cannot believe it is my 25th consecutive Lakeside. When I first threw a dart there I could never have imagined I would be here now. You don’t even think about it.”

Martin 'Wolfie' Adams

Wolfie’s first championship in 1994 saw him beat Denmark’s Per Skau 3-0 in his opening match before being knocked out in the quarter-finals of a tournament where he was crowned champion in 2007, 2010 and 2011.

But his main priority has become dealing with prostate cancer which was diagnosed in 2016.

He now only has to have check ups every six months and is happy with life – having not had to change things too much.

Adams said: “I had the health check in May and November which is good. I still eat the same and drink the same, it is probably not the best thing in the world but that is just me and there is nothing in the rule book that says I can’t.

“You live your life as you feel you need to. The doctor has never questioned me over what I eat. But my GP has. He says I drink too much but he does understand what my job is.

“I try to practice every day but health wise it has not been possible over the last year with the frequency I like. But the last couple of months I have been back in the pub, it is starting to take shape and hopefully it will be in shape on the day.”

TV: Channel 4 (from 1pm), BT Sport (from 7pm).
