Tahir spins Dolphins to win over Warriors

2018-01-06 01:19

Cape Town - Best-ever Momentum One-Day Cup figures by Imran Tahir paved the way for the Dolphins to secure a comfortable 79-run bonus-point win over the Warriors in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

The Proteas spinner claimed a superb five for 21 in 8.3 overs as the visitors shot out their hosts for 171 as they easily defended their 251-target - built around an unbeaten half-century by Cody Chetty - at St George's Park Cricket Ground.

Attie Maposa also chipped in with two for 22 to help the Dolphins make it two wins from three matches in the 2017/18 campaign.

The men from KwaZulu-Natal had won the toss and opted to bat first at the start, but most of their batsmen failed to make the most of their starts.

They had slipped to 141 for six after Jon-Jon Smuts (4/55) and Ayabulela Gqamane (3/26) excelled with the ball.

But Chetty struck 53 (69 balls, 4 fours, 1 six) to left the Dolphins to a competitive total.

Lesiba Ngoepe struck 44 up front for the Warriors, but they soon found themselves in trouble on 72 for five thanks to the spin of Tahir and the seam of Maposa.

Smuts tried to rescue them with 45, but he was eventually last man out to Tahir, who bettered his previous best domestic 50-over franchise record of four for 16 for the Titans against the Lions in 2007/08 by bowling his side to victory.
