Morbidly obese man loses 200lbs after gastric bypass surgery

Steven Assanti, 33, became one of the most controversial stars of TLC’s My 600lb Life when he appeared on the show with his 650lbs (46st) brother, Justin, in April last year.

He was kicked out of the weight-loss programme and forced into rehab to treat his addiction to painkillers – which meant his weight spiralled further out of control.

At the start of the show, Steven, from Rhode Island, US, weighed a whopping 734lbs (52st), but lost a total of 57lbs (4st) by the end of the two-part series.

Steven earned himself a reputation before starting the show as he posted bizarre home videos of himself eating and going on rants, as well as getting kicked out of a hospital for ordering a pizza.

Although they shared an addiction to food, he and his brother Justin had not spoken for months before filming started.

The siblings grew up in a troubled household with an alcoholic mum who neglected them after separating from their temperamental dad, Steven Sr., when they were 11 and five.

As teens, Steven and Justin both turned to food as a way of coping with their mum’s violent boyfriend.

And when Steven first appeared on the show, he was scoffing six pizzas a day as well as struggling with an addiction to painkillers.

Dr Younan Nowzaradan, the show’s specialist and surgeon, kicked Steven out of the hospital after he was aggressive towards hospital staff.

He failed to follow the weight-loss programme at home and as a result Dr Nowzaradan stopped treating Steven.

Steven was then taken to rehab for a week-long stint to treat his addiction but made repeated attempts to try and persuade staff to give him painkillers.

By following the show, Steven piled on weight and returned back to his bad habits.

Viewers watched him being turned away as he demanded staff for painkillers before Dr Nowzaradan finally agreeing to perform a gastric bypass surgery.

After the operation, he claimed he was still in pain and wanted drugs – even after an endoscopy revealing everything was fine.

But when he returned for his check-in, it was revealed he had lost 92lbs (6st) in two months.

With the initial weight loss, Steven has now lost a total of 116lbs (8st 2lbs) and his current weight is 618lbs (44st).

Justin has also vowed to lose weight and have surgery after seeing his brother’s success.
