When it comes to New Year’s Eve celebrations, people often have crazy anecdotes and memories to share. These usually revolve around nasty hangovers, weird photographs or some fun activities. But this one perhaps beats them all! A drunk Norwegian man took a USD 2,220 cab from Denmark to Norway, via Sweden, and ran off without paying. The cab driver then informed the police, who landed up at the man’s apartment. To their surprise, the man was peacefully sleeping. When the police woke him up, he agreed to pay the bill. The Oslo police then shared the entire incident in a series of tweets on Twitter.

The man, who will surely not forget the beginning of 2018 in a hurry, is a forty-year-old Oslo resident. He had been partying and drinking in Copenhagen’s waterfront district Nyhavn on December 31. After the party, the man booked a can in an inebriated state from Copenhagen to his house in Oslo. The distance between the two places if over 600 kms! The six-hour ride covered three countries – starting from Denmark, moving through Sweden and finally ending in Norway. The 600 km, six-hour drive naturally resulted in a hefty bill of USD 2,220, which the man refused to pay after reaching his house in the Abildso neighbourhood, in the Norwegian capital. The taxi driver was left stranded outside the man’s house as his car battery ran out.

The Danish taxi driver then called the Oslo police, at around 1 am on January 1st, for help. Reportedly, he told the police that the man disappeared into his own apartment. Upon arrival, the police found that the man had passed out on his bed. After he was shaken away by the police, the man cleared the taxi bill of his long-ride across three countries. The cab was later rescued with the help of a recovery vehicle. Norwegian Taxi Association director Roar Refseth states that taxi trips such as this one are uncommon. A Daily Mail article quotes him, saying that it is important for drivers to collect the payment upfront in case of such long rides.
