More than 100 Kmart and Sears stores will close this spring, including five low-performing stores in North Carolina.

Sears Holding, the parent company of both retailers, made the announcement Thursday.

In North Carolina, no Sears stores are slated to close, but five Kmart stores will close in April.

They are:

▪ 706 E. Dixon Blvd., Shelby

▪ 2515 Horner Blvd., Sanford

▪ 395 Westgate Plaza Road, Franklin

▪ 175 Freedom Way, Midway Park, near Camp Lejeune in Onslow County

▪ 815 E. Innes St., Salisbury

In total, Sears Holdings plans to close 64 Kmart and 39 Sears locations by May. Close-out sales will begin Jan. 12.

The closures are part of an effort to “right size” its footprint and the company’s finances, according to a news release.

Sears, once one of the country’s most successful retailers, has struggled with the rise of e-commerce and some management missteps.

It acquired Kmart in 2003 and combined the two stores under Sears Holdings two years later.

It has closed more than 1,000 stores in the past few years, including Kmarts in Fayetteville and Goldsboro last year. It now has 1,104 stores across the country.

Eligible employees will receive severance, according to the release, but it did not say how many employees would be affected overall. Most of the retailers’ employees are part-time.
