The Eagles' coaching staff might look different next season, with defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and quarterback coach John DeFilippo named as candidates for vacant head coaching jobs.
The Eagles' front office might get a major overhaul, too.
According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas is a possible candidate to be the Houston Texans' general manager.
Whether the Texans would need permission to interview Douglas depends on when they try to interview him and what kind of job they are offering.
Here is a blueprint for Eagles to win in playoffs
According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, the rules around requesting permission to interview a candidate for a general manager job are "murky."
Florio writes:
For employees in the final year of their contracts, permission can't be denied -- but under certain circumstances a departure can be delayed. For employees not in the final year of their contracts, the current team can block an interview for a position that doesn't entail "(1) the authority over all personnel decisions related to the signing of free agents, the selection of players in the College Draft, trades, terminations, and related decisions, and (2) the responsibility for coordinating other football activities with the Head Coach.
If the Texans request permission to interview Douglas right now, the Eagles could block that request since they are still in the playoffs. Considering the huge role Douglas has played in helping to turn the team around, and that owner Jeffrey Lurie has praised Douglas, they would almost certainly block any request.
Speaking last offseason, Lurie called hiring Douglas the "pivotal moment of the last year." Douglas has been influential in the Eagles' drafts, including the 2017 selections that netted defensive end Derek Barnett in the first round.
If the Texans were to request to interview Douglas for a position that contained "authority over all personnel decisions", however, the Eagles would be unable to stop him from interviewing or accepting the job.
The Eagles have a history of blocking employees from interviewing with other teams: Last year, they blocked DeFilippo from interviewing with the Jets for offensive coordinator.
If they are allowed to, the Eagles will almost certainly block Douglas from interviewing and compensate him. Another option could be to give Douglas the title of general manager with the Eagles, as nobody in the organization currently holds that title.
