Last year was an interesting one at the movies. Hollywood churned out more than a few big films that really struck a chord with audiences worldwide. After the whole #OscarsSoWhite fiasco, how much progress has the movie industry actually made? This week we take a look back at some of the key moments for film.

According to some critics, regardless of the fact that Moonlight won Best Picture at the Oscars last year, the #OscarsSoWhite issue is far from being solved. Moonlight tells the story of a young black man growing up in Miami and his struggle with cultural identity. Although the representation of coloured people and minorities has improved in Hollywood, there is still a long way to go.

It was a big year for women in Hollywood as we saw great work from female directors. Greta Gerwig directed Lady Bird starring Saoirse Ronan. The movie centres round a woman struggling to keep her family together after her husband loses his job. The semi-autobiographical film impressed both audiences and critics alike. It was described as a “low budget gem” after costing $10 million (Dhs3.67m) to make and bringing in $30m (Dhs110m) at the box office.

In other news, if you are guilty of overindulging during the holiday period, turn to our Health pages to read about eight different but simple ways to burn calories. Apparently sleep is great way to lose weight as it helps regulate our metabolisms. Drinking oolong tea is another great way to aid digestion and feel healthier.
