Another arctic wave follows the storm, bringing record-challenging cold

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Now that the storm has moved away, the big freeze will settle over Southern New England with the potential for record-breaking cold this weekend.

"Strong winds trailing the Thursday snowstorm will linger over Southern New England today and tonight," the National Weather Service says in its forecast discussion. "This will bring considerable blowing and drifting snow. The wind also brings another blast of arctic air that will be with us through the weekend resulting in dangerously cold wind chills."

A wind chill advisory goes into effect at 7 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Sunday.

The temperature in Providence was 13 degrees shortly before 7 a.m. and that's probably as warm as it gets on this Friday as colder air is moving in from the west and the temperature is likely to drop during the day, despite mostly sunny skies, according to the Weather Service.

"Wind chills in all parts of Southern New England will be subzero through the day, and in northern and western Mass values will be -15 to -25 even during the middle of the day," the Weather Service says.

Expect areas of blowing snow on this Friday, with the wind blowing from the northwest at 6 to 16 mph in Providence and gusting up to 39 mph.

The temperature will drop to about zero tonight in Providence with a wind chill of about 14 degrees below zero. The wind will gust up to 39 mph.

On Saturday, the high will reach just 8 degrees and the wind chill will drop as low as 17 degrees below, despite mostly sunny skies.

The temperature will drop to 7 degrees below zero Saturday night with wind chill values as low as 20 degrees below.

The high Sunday should reach 15 degrees with the wind shifting to come outof the southwest Sunday afternoon and warmer air moving in for Monday.
