Actor and singer Jon Paul Steuer has died at 33. He passed away on Jan. 1 and a cause of death has not yet been revealed.
"It is with heavy hearts and saddened minds that we announce the passing of our dear friend and singer Jonny Jewels, AKA Jon Paul Steuer," his band P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S. revealed in a Facebook post.
The former child actor appeared as a young Klingon in Star Trek: The Next Generation in the 1990 episode, "Reunion." He went on to star as Brett Butler's son Quentin Kelly in the sitcom Grace Under Fire before exiting in 1996. In a 2015 interview with The A.V. Club, he revealed he left the show because of Brett's erratic behavior and the negative publicity surrounding it.
"When everything kind of hit the press with Grace Under Fire, all those negative stories [about Brett Butler] started being spread. It was pretty barbaric," he said. "I couldn't go to the grocery store without people staring and pointing at me, because I was on the cover of every tabloid at every checkout stand."
Unable to escape the attention, he quit acting altogether at the age of 12. "I wanted to forge on with acting after quitting the show, and I went out on a few interviews. But even then they'd turn into question-and-answer sessions with casting agents about Grace Under Fire," he added. "I was kind of blown away by how unprofessional people inside the industry were. It really soured me. I didn't want that kind of attention."
Steuer also starred as Johnny Vennaro in the film Little Giants and appeared in shows like The Wonder Years and Day by Day. After acting, he joined the band P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S. as lead singer and, per Deadline, opened the vegan restaurant Harvest in Northeast Portland in 2015.
