This Is Us Will Have to Return to Memphis Without Uncle Ricky

One of the most remarkable episodes of This Is UsSeason 1 was an episode titled "Memphis," in which Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and his father William (Ron Cephas Jones) took a final trip to Memphis, Tennessee before William succumbed to his illness and passed away. Showrunner Dan Fogelman has promised that This Is Us will return to Memphis, but it sounds like it will be without a major character from that first visit.

Randall's uncle Ricky (Brian Tyree Henry) played a huge part in the flashbacks as well as present-day storyline of "Memphis," and his musical performance in particular drew a lot of attention from fans and critics. Unfortunately, when TV Guide asked Brian Tyree Henry at the Television Critics Association winter press tour about a possible return to the show, he didn't sound very positive about our chances of seeing Ricky again.

"I don't think I'm going to be back on This Is Us," Henry says, "I think that Uncle Ricky had his moment, he did what he had to do. Plus, This Is Us has gone to some places that I'm just like, 'Oh my gosh, I definitely don't know where I'll fit into that.'"

The show was actually supposed to return to Memphis for a Thanksgiving episode this season, but Fogelman told Deadline that the concept was eventually bumped in order to create the Big Three episodes. He did, however, say that they intend to revisit Memphis and Randall's family there in the future. "We have a lot of real estate from Memphis and we'll find our way back there," Fogelman said.

What's Memphis without the smooth tunes of Uncle Ricky though?!

This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
