State health officials have rejected plans for a new psychiatric hospital in South Carolina.

The Greenville News reported the Department of Health and Environmental Control has rejected plans for a hospital to be operated by Greenville Health System.

The hospital system has asked state officials to reconsider their rejection.

Plans for the hospital were announced in November 2016. It was to be built in partnership with Acadia Healthcare, which operates nearly 600 behavioral health care facilities around the United States and elsewhere.

The new hospital would replace the aging Marshall I. Pickens Hospital and expand services in the area.

The proposed new hospital was opposed by Springbrook Behavioral Health and the Carolina Center for Behavioral Health, both in Greenville County. They said a new hospital would unnecessarily duplicate their services.
