An officer keeps watch at the Pueblo County Detention Center on Dec. 6. The jail, which is currently well beyond capacity, will not be replaced after voters rejected a tax hike to pay for a new facility.

Re: “Pueblo County officials warned their jail is Colorado’s most overcrowded. When voters were asked to help, they resoundingly said ‘no,’ ” Jan. 4 news story.

The article about the Pueblo jail situation makes it look like the voters are to blame for the situation. But it also could be said that voters are tired of officials (city council and county commissioners) being fiscally irresponsible and funding pet projects while ignoring genuine community needs until they reach the breaking point and then claiming the sky is falling. That’s been going on for at least 50 years in Pueblo. Have they never heard of budgeting for capital needs? Reminds me of the old saying that failure to prepare on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
