DUBAI: A paediatric surgery team at the Saudi German Hospital in Dubai extracted 24 magnetic pieces from the stomach of a two-year-old child.

Dr Kamalesh Bal, Pediatric Surgeon, said that the child was in severe abdominal pain and malnutrition, and was taken to the emergency department. He was examined by Dr Mustafa Al-Hakam, digestion specialist. It was found that he swallowed strange objects, several months ago, which led to complications that affected him. The medical team, through a complex surgery, removed the pieces and have now shifted the child to the intensive care unit.

Bal emphasised the importance of parents’ awareness of the toys containing small pieces accessible to children under 3. The hospital received two similar cases that required urgent medical intervention in recent weeks.
