Three women were injured in a crash this afternoon after their driver allegedly fled police in South Auckland.

Police tried to pull over a vehicle driving dangerously near the Papakura town centre at 12.15pm.

Counties Manukau South Area Commander Inspector Dave Glossop said the car failed to stop for police, who then chased it.

"But [the pursuit was] quickly abandoned due to the offending vehicle's reckless driving, he said.

"The vehicle has then continued on, without being pursued and crashed on Elliot St, Papakura a short time later."

Glossop said two females in the car suffered serious injuries were rushed to Middlemore Hospital.

"The driver attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended and is now in custody," he said.

Firearms were located in the vehicle, Glossop said.

Enquiries are ongoing and more charges likely, he said.
