Sears, Kmart to close 100 more stores, including 1 in N.J.

An additional 103 Sears and KMart stores will close in the next several months, Sears Holdings announced Thursday.

Among the locations set to go out of business is the Sears on Hooper Avenue in Toms River. That store will close in early April. The Sears Auto Center there will shutter its doors in late January.

Sears Holdings said 64 Kmart and 39 Sears stores are slated to close between early March and early April. 

Eligible employees will receive severance and all employees can apply for openings at other stores. The affected locations plan to being clearance sales as early as Jan. 12. Sears didn't say how many workers would lose their jobs.

In November, the company announced the Sears in the Phillipsburg Mall will close by the end of January.

In August, Sears Holdings said Kmart stores on Route 38 in Moorestown and Route 46 in Parsippany would close by mid-November.

Sears Holdings closed about 250 stores last year and is down to less than 1,250 nationwide. In 2006, there were more than 3,400.

In March, the company said there was "substantial doubt" about whether it could stay in business.
