Five die in road crashes

At least five persons were killed in road accidents in the country yesterday and on Wednesday.

Our Jhenidah correspondent reports, a college student was killed when an oncoming truck hit his motorbike on Jhenidah-Chuadanga road in Baidanga bus stand area around 10:00am yesterday.

Nayan Kumar Ghosh, 18, son of Bidhan Chandra Ghosh of Borai village, was a first-year student of Government KC College. He was going to his sister's house at Protappur village.

Police sent the body to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The driver fled the scene.

Meanwhile in Mymensingh, a youth was killed and 15 others were injured when a Dhaka-bound bus skidded off the road and fell into a roadside ditch on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Rangamatia area yesterday.

The incident occurred as the driver lost control over the steering, said police quoting witnesses. The male deceased, aged around 20, could not be identified as of filing the report around 6:00pm, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.

The injured are being treated at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said OC Jakiur Rahman of Trishal Police Station.

Our staff correspondent from Chittagong adds, two persons were killed when an oil tanker rammed their motorbike in Airport Road area yesterday.

The deceased are -- Rabbi Sheikh, 17, son of Shaheed Sheikh, and his cousin Alamin Sheikh, 26, son of Farukh Sheikh -- hailing from Pirojpur. They used to work as clearing and forwarding (C&F) agents, said Md Enayet, a cousin of the victims.

The incident took place in front of Rubi Cement Factory area around 1:30pm when they were heading to work. Rabbi died on the spot, said Sub-inspector Rajib Dey of EPZ Police Station. Alamin was declared dead at Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Filing of a case is underway.

In another incident in Chittagong on Wednesday, Hamid, an employee of Meghna Group, a C&F agency, was critically injured when a truck hit him from behind at No 2 NCTT gate at the port around 11:30pm. He was declared dead at CMCH.
