Mac reviews annual fees, sales tax

The McPherson City Commission met for a regular meeting on Tuesday and here's what you need to know:

1 Commissioners approved the annual fee resolution, which establishes costs and fees to be assessed by the city.

Changes include the addition of grease management program fees and related costs for permits.

The resolution also includes a tiered corporate membership schedule to Turkey Creek Golf Course. Businesses can choose to become silver, gold or platinum members, and USD 418 employees and teachers can become members from May 1 to Aug. 31 for $425, but with no guest passes.

2 Commissioners reviewed the annual sales and use tax report.

In 2017, the city's portion of sales and use taxes was $1,973,988.92, which is up 2.29 percent from the year prior. The portion of sales and use tax for streets was $1,561,886.40 and the portion for long-term projects was $1,561,886.40. The total annual distribution of sales and use taxes was $5,097,761.72, which is up 0.86 percent from 2016.

3 The commission voted to authorize an amount not to exceed $45,000 to McPherson Industrial Development Company for GoMcPherson marketing for the People Recruitment/Engagement Plan and for the MIDC Business Recruitment Plan for 2018.

GoMcPherson Marketing for People Recruitment/Engagement and the MIDC Business Recruitment Plan for 2018 has a total cost of $156,000. MIDC has already secured commitments of $25,000 from McPherson County and $35,000 from McPherson Board of Public Utilities.

MIDC/GoMcPherson is requesting the additional $45,000 to pay the cost of the total recruitment plan.

Adequate funds are available in the industrial fund, which was established to assist in funding for industrial recruitment efforts. The $45,000 is in addition to the $51,000 that is paid annually as part of the city's contract with MIDC.

4 The McPherson Convention and Visitors Bureau was approved to award a number of grants for upcoming events.

A $600 grant will be awarded for the 54th Annual High School Boys Basketball Invitational Tournament to be held Jan. 18, 19 and 20 at McPherson High School. A $600 grant will be awarded for the Mid America Classic High School Girls Basketball Tournament to be held Jan. 25, 26 and 27 at McPherson High School.

The Kansas Kids Town Team Tournament will receive two $600 grants, one for the tournament for third and fourth grade students to be held Feb. 17 and 18, and one for the tournament for fifth and sixth grade students to be held Feb. 24 and 25, both in McPherson. The Kansas Kids Town Team Tournament also will receive a $750 grant for the tournament for seventh and eighth graders, to be held on March 3 and 4 in McPherson.

Lastly, a $750 grant will be awarded to the McPherson Chamber of Commerce for their event "A Passion for Service," which will be held Jan. 23 at the McPherson Museum.

5 Commissioners approved an ordinance that makes a modification to the current codes section governing regulations of impoundments at the animal shelter. The only change being made to this code section is that Section (d)(2) is being changed from "excluding the day of impoundment" to "including the day of impoundment."
